Teething puppies chew because their gums hurt, not because they are being difficult. The urge peaks over the months the adult teeth are coming through, and it does not respond to being told off — suppressing it does not work, redirecting it does.

The whole game during teething is having an obvious right answer within reach at the moment the wrong answer occurs to them. That means the chew needs to be somewhere the puppy already is, not in a toy box in another room.

This one is textured along its whole length, so there is something for the gums to work against rather than a smooth surface that slides off the teeth. It is soft enough for a puppy mouth but built to be worked at, with a squeaker inside to keep attention on it once the novelty of the shape has gone. At about 19cm it is long enough for a dog to hold at one end with a paw and chew at the other, which is how they prefer to do it.

Rope and fabric toys are not indestructible, and this one is no exception. Chewing should be supervised, and once a toy starts coming apart it goes in the bin rather than back in the box.

Worth knowing

What owners miss

Teething puppies chew because their gums are uncomfortable, not because they are being difficult, and the urge peaks over the months the adult teeth come through. Suppressing it does not work; redirecting it does.

How this helps

A textured stick gives the gums something to work against. Having an obvious right answer within reach supports the redirection that stops a chair leg becoming the default, which is the whole game during teething.
