Some dogs hear the clippers come out and leave the room. A grinder takes the nail down gradually instead of in one snap, so there's no sudden pressure to brace against, and it leaves a rounded edge rather than a sharp one that catches on furniture.
This runs under 45dB — quieter than normal conversation — with very little vibration. Noise and buzz are usually what put a dog off a grinder, so both matter more than they sound.
Three openings in the head take different nail sizes: narrowest for small breeds, widest for large. Five speeds let you go gently with a nervous dog and step up for thick nails.

The quick (the blood vessel running inside the nail, which bleeds if you cut it) grows forward as the nail grows long. Once nails have been left too long, they cannot be taken back to a short nail in one session at all — the quick has to retreat first, over several trims.
