Nail trims go wrong because you can't see the quick — the vein running inside the nail — and on dark claws you're essentially guessing. There's an LED in the handle here that lights the nail from behind, so on most nails you can make out where it ends before you cut.

Stainless steel blades, sharp enough to go through in one clean press. A blunt clipper crushes the nail before it cuts, and that's what makes a dog flinch and then remember next time.

The handles are shaped and non-slip, which helps when you're holding a paw steady with the other hand.

About 13cm long, sized for small and medium dogs, cats and rabbits. Too small for the thick claws of a large breed.

Take a little at a time rather than aiming for one cut. On black nails, take thin slices and stop when a pale circle appears in the centre.

Worth knowing

What owners miss

Long nails change how a dog stands. When the nail hits the floor before the pad does, weight shifts back off the toes, and over time that alters posture and the way each foot loads on every step.

How this helps

Regular short trims keep the nail clear of the ground. Lighting the nail from behind shows where the quick (the blood vessel inside the nail) ends before you cut, which supports trimming often and calmly rather than putting it off until it becomes a job.
